Sport Psychology is growing in demand tremendously in today’s competitive society. Youth athletes need every edge they can get to compete for a spot on their team, to qualify for year end finals and ultimately for a place in the college of their choice. The pros need to be able to continue to progress and maintain their consistency in their performance under the pressure of the physical and mental demands of being a professional athlete. The weekend warrior wants to perform well in order to enjoy his/her outings. Sport psychology offers what each of these athletes is after, tools to create consistently high level performance.

WHAT IS SPORT PSYCHOLOGY?

The most common question I get regarding Sport Psychology is, what exactly is Sport Psychology? Sport Psychology is a branch of psychology that is cognitive/behavioral in nature and develops skill in the following areas:


  • how to improve focus
  • develop effective thinking patterns
  • control intensity (increase or relax)
  • create and accomplish goals
  • increase motivation
  • develop imagery skills


Sport psychology is not a therapeutic practice, but does incorporate aspects of counseling with athletes about their past and present experiences on the field (court, arena, etc.) and the other parts of life and how those areas affect their sport performance.
